The Chen Clan Academy is one of the most representative architectural complexes in Guangzhou and even in southern China. It was completed in 1893 and is renowned for its exquisite wood carvings, stone carvings, brick carvings, plaster reliefs, pottery sculptures, copper and iron castings, and painted art. It is now the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, a place where you can quickly get to know the folk art of Guangdong. ‘Chen’ is one of the most common last names in China. The Chen Clan Academy was a joint effort by 72 Chen villages to build a clan temple. The most famous craftsmen of the time were invited. In the past, the Chen Clan Academy served several main purposes: first, it was a place to worship ancestors and hold sacrificial activities; second, it provided accommodation for Chen clansmen who came to Guangzhou on business or to take the imperial examinations, which can be regarded as a hotel exclusively for the Chen clan; third, it was a school for the descendants of the Chen clan, providing better education for their children and enhancing the clan’s social status.
